Step aboard the trolley for a tour to three of Portsmouth’s most notable cemeteries… During our travels we will discuss and share images of mourning practices that are famous for their dark beauty. Discover antique photos of elaborate mourning costumes, plumed horses drawing lacquered funerary carriages, and countless mourning ephemera housed in museums and private collections. Among Portsmouth’s gardens of stone are the famous and infamous. Sinners and saints. Mayors and madams. Politicians and perfectly ordinary citizens. Each of them has a story to tell…and some of those stories have become legendary.
Cross the veil with us as we explore New Hampshire’s oldest Colonial burial ground, the Point of Graves, dating from the late 1600’s, which houses some of the most beautifully detailed 17th century gravestones north of Boston.
The North Cemetery is home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence, 18th century Tavern keepers and several underground tombs. The delicate details of carved angels and portrait stones will have you reaching for your camera. The lore and legends will intrigue you.
The South Cemetery and Proprieters Burial Ground offer stories of some of the most famous and infamous people in the city’s history. Discover the tales from the land before it became a cemetery and you will find why so many locals are drawn to take late afternoon walks on the grounds.
