This walking tour serves up twisted mix of Portsmouth’s fascinating tavern history and ghost stories. Many of these ghost stories have been whispered quietly behind closed doors and some haven’t been told to the general public – until now. Who is the mischievous ghost who knocks down glasses and locks doors in one local Pub? Who are the ladies that are dressed in 19th century gowns that peer from the windows of a former local tavern? Who are these mischievous ghosts that turn off lights and move furniture around in some locations leaving the servers looking over their shoulders? Unsolved murders – this tour has them. Bizarre drinking habits – you might be surprised. Secret smuggling tunnels – discover what is going on beneath the streets of this old city by the sea.
Portsmouth has a brewery history dating back to colonial times. Following the Civil War, beer and ale-making became Portsmouth’s dominant industry. Portsmouth was home to the Frank Jones Brewery, which was America’s largest ale-maker in the 19th century. The legacy of mysteries from that brewery will be revealed on this tour. Guests will also learn some surprising facts from local brewing history.
Please note this is NOT a drinking tour or Pub Crawl. No drinks are served and we do not go inside any establishments on the tour. We will suggest places to go for a “spirited” experience when the tour is over.
