Explore the darker past of Portsmouth on this haunted history tour that steps back into a hidden and almost forgotten past of the city’s South End!

Seek out the shadows of shanghaied sailors and uncover the city’s sordid past. Did you know that some Portsmouth street names were changed and buildings were moved to hide the secrets of the 19th century? Take a walk through the storied old red light district and be surprised to discover what a rough and gritty seaport this area once was.

Listen to tales about the Museum of Oddities and the train that ended up in a watery grave. Truth is stranger than fiction with ghost stories from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and abandoned Naval prison. Make a quick stop in the oldest common burial ground in New Hampshire that dates back to the 17th century.

Discover the mysterious happenings from one of our local haunted theaters. We will also reveal the location of a secret tunnel that even the locals don’t know about.

Guests will be able to make a “then and now” side-by-side comparison by viewing historic photos and newspaper headlines at many locations on the tour as well. Please note that the stories are a little darker on this tour and may not be appropriate for younger children.
